Warung Koffie Batavia: Bringing Batavia To Medan

I assume you feel the same too, so let me tell you about our experience there.

But, it’s not.

Seperti bentuk lambang hati, dsb. The taste is nice, tapi gue saranin sebaiknya kamu cicipi saat masih hangat.

Menu-menu makanan berat pun disajikan saat kami masih ngobrol-ngobrol satu sama lain sambil menghabiskan kue cubit yang masih tersisa tadi. Soto Betawi, Nasi Goreng Batavia, Mie Tek-Tek, Martabak Mozarella dengan side dish Bitterballen.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERASoto BetawiOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERANasi Goreng BataviaOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAMie Tek-Tek

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAMartabak MozarellaOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERABitterballen

OH ya! Hampir saja kelupaan.

Maklum, ini pertama kalinya gue cobain mustard dan langsung gue putuskan kalau mustard is not for me. But, the bitterballen themselves tasted nice with a lil salty taste from it.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Gimana makanannya? Sudah pada coba Siomay di sini? Kami rekomen lho menu ini,” said the lady. Gosh! We’re all full already! But, okay. We were going to order this very last menu just to please our curiosity.

Let’s make it different this time. Biar nggak eneg maka bumbunya kami siram sedikit saja, sisanya kalau ada yang mau tinggal dicocol saja.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERASiomay

For me, the sauce is a lil bit clearer than I expected. I prefer a lumpier one, with more peanut than water.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING (FOR ME) ABOUT THIS PLACE IS:

Make you feel like the Spring is never end here.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAHere I remind you again about this favorite corner of mine.

We’re close to the end of this article. There’s a lot more that we wanna share to each other and most importantly to you.

Such a sweet “Goodbye” and a strong “Come Back Again” message to all of us.

The Three Carrari

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The rumor of its opening is now clear, setelah sempat vakum beberapa saat, cafe yang menempati 2 ruko di jalan Palang Merah ini pun tampil berbeda dengan tema warna yang khas dari brand ini red, blue, and gold.

So why the name The Three Carrari you’d ask. Resto (or cafe if you’d prefer it) ini dikelola oleh Carrari family: May (Sang Bunda) with her children Raymond, Caresse, dan Richmond; Each with dedicated skills.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAnd that’s one bar left for…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Occupancy space disini boleh dibilang rather limited. Meskipun 2 ruko, hampir setengahnya sudah dijadikan bar dan display area, leaving you with couple tables dan communal table di bagian tengah ruangan. It’s just nice enough kalo kamu hanya ngemil2 kue dan snacks.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

From The Kitchen

Yes you’ll still find Nasi goreng and mie goreng but I believe that’s just to please old taste bud. Let’s start with appetizer…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAp-pear in the snow (55K)

Ap-pear in the snow

This pear, butter-head lettuce, crispy lettuce, feta cheese and balsamic dressing is one bold statement from Richmond “I’m trying to bring something different here”.

I enjoyed it though (generous amount of rockets, it’s in the season they said.). Apart from strong rockets taste, it’s mix balance of sweety pear, a bit soury sauce and a little strong hint from feta. In the end, you only fall into this category: Hate or Love, and I’m into the later.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWhy So Sous-vide? (65K)

Why so Sous-Vide?

Dari menu Ap-pear in the snow, you can start to read the pattern. Why so sous-vide, with ‘sous-vide’ spelled as ‘sweet’—Why so sweet?

63*c sous vide duck egg yolk, almond, smoked beef ham, squid, butter head lettuce, butter, bread crumb, quinoa and asparagus. I must say, this is one hell of a bold experiment. I still enjoyed it but apparently my family members had to strongly disagree.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe sous vided egg, not runny yet smooth

24 Carrot Magic in the Plate

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA24 Carrot Magic in the Plate (60K)

Masih di kategori salad, this one is probably our table’s favorite. Crispy lettuce, sous-vide chicken breast, cherry tomato, seaweed, sesame seed and carrot vinaigrette. Tasted so refreshingly good. *And no, itu bukan salted egg ya say…

Marinara Pasta

I must say marinara pasta disini tried to be different and outstanding. Dari deskripsi di menu sih kinda won the pitch buat diorder: the tomato base is infused with seashells and 4 kinds of different herbs, slow-cooked at simmering temperature for 3-4 hours long.

And it definitely made not to please everyone. Buat kamu yang suka strong herb, this is for you.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAMarinara Pasta (88K)OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAJudging from its color yang ga terlalu reddish, tomato flavor in this menu was toned down by herbs and seafood.

French Fries

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAJust French Fries (32K), what do you expect? Every kid loved it, period.

Creamy Mushroom Soup served with Drops of Truffle Oils

Sebenarnya sih, ada satu jenis soup yg pengen diorder because the price yakni Thai Green Curry served with rice, which is priced at amazingly 110K. But it’s seasonal, dan sayangnya sold out upon my visit.

So we had creamy mushroom soup instead. It was good! Very strong mushroom flavor, and with 2 puffy sticks! Puffy sticks couldn’t go wrong.

Out of three (Mango dan Morello Cherry), saya pilih Guava *coz I’m curious how it’s processed*. Menu yang satu ini berada di bagian dingin and using different dough than regular croissant. I heard you could ask for a little warm up to get extra crispness.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOh wait, where’s the guava? *ternyata salah potong*, fillingnya rupanya agak di luar hehe…

Apart from pretty art and cups, there’s nothing else to impress (Okay the coffee was good but that’s it). Except perhaps—Kosudi. No…not Kopi Susu Dingin. Their own version is called Kopi Sugar Daddy. Double Espresso, Milk, dan ehem…gula aren a.k.a Caramelized Natural Palm Sugar.

Instead of Whipping Cream, they have their own version and look liked beer foam, managed to steal instagram trend since their opening though.

One is never enough, more is always a must

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

That’s how a tagline goes in The Three Carrari. It really was a good start, beautiful interior, great pastry, unique main course offering, and beverages has certain standard too.

If there’s one thing to pick as a highlight, it’s something to do with puff. Anything with puff here is worth trying. I can easily vote their Apple Puff the best in town so far.

Caresse and Bu May’s passion bring new level of culinary in Medan. I’ve yet to see Richmond’s bold move to bring something different. It’s a battle between idealism and crowds’ demand.

Or even better yet, a fusion between French, Thai and Indo?

Bak Mie Khek & Chinese Food Jalan Irian Barat

I was confused with Hok Ciu meatballs too, at first.

What’s interested me is the egg yolk. I didn’t know how did the owner make it but, bener-bener best kali buatku!

IMG_6713Bak Mie Khek (28rb)

IMG_6715

Tips on enjoying a portion of Bak Mie Khek is kuah sopnya jangan langsung dituang semua. Extremely, I prefer to enjoy it without any soup.

IMG_6709Ownernya sadar kamera. 😀

And again, mata gue susah dikontrol yang mengakibatkan aku pesen satu porsi lagi.

IMG_6730

Topping-topping seafoodnya rame, se-generous Lor Telur Bak Mie Khek tadi. Udang yang diberikan juga berukuran cukup fantastis. Lap Cheong? Sure a boost for this meal!

Kalau kamu masih belum menemukan tempatnya, ajak gue aja deh ya!^^

The Sailmaker – Sydney

Last but not least from last week culinary trip was The Sailmaker which located in 5 star hotel Hyatt Regency, 161-170 Sussex st, Darling Harbour, Sydney. Actually we rarely had fancy dining like this unless to celebrate special occasion like birthday or anniversary. That because two weeks ago was my hubby’s birthday, so we keen to have special dinner. And to save the budget we bought voucher deal on Scoopon $89 for two include wine, as regular price $65pp. Not that because we’re pinchpenny, but, if you can save more bucks why not. The point is we still can eat that food, right?

The reservation was very easy, we just need booking through Scoopon app and selected our desire date and time. Then, just presented our Scoopon voucher barcode to be scanned. Then just be seated. Waitress would offer you red wine or white wine as included in your package. If you want other cocktails or drinks it may extra charge.

Start from appetizer, they have wide range of salads, cheese platters (with beet and charcoal crackers), soups (mushroom and seafood bisque), cured meats, and pate (chicken liver).

From this department I just tried the pate (forget to take picture) tasted like puree chicken liver it might be better if they served foie grass hahaha.., then tried dumpling salad which tasted so so, seafood bisque with croutons which tasted okay, crackers with camembert and gouda cheese ~ which i liked camembert more rather than the gouda, and cured meat (salami). I didnt try much in this department cause mostly are veggies (and I’m not fan of veggies 😔).

From seafood departement we just found fresh oyster, cooked king prawns, crabs, mussels, and baked salmon.

I just had fresh oyster, king prawns and crabs. I even couldnt stop myself to diggin the oyster over and over again cause they were so fresh! The key of having seafood is fresh, if they’re fresh you dont need to put anything on it. I didnt eat the salmon cause I can cook salmon anytime I want, but fresh oyster is really expensive here.

Unlike what I read on Zomato that they had limited hot dish (only baked salmon/barramundi), seems like they take the comments seriously. I found some pasta, rice, and roasted beef, yeah at least they make improvement even not much. My hubby had the roasted beef he said it was good, the beef perfectly cooked as he’s a big fan of rare meat like that.

In dessert department there were plenty varieties of cakes and pies, cookies and standard fresh fruit (watermelon, pineapple, and melon). I hope in the future they can serve more dessert like soft served, jelly and/or coffee/tea. Cause on my personal opinion, after had heavy meals our tongue just want something light to refreshen our mouth.

I just tried berries pie with passionfruit sauce, the sauce really help to balance the overlysweet pie.

Overall all dining experience was good, good quality of food and taste good, fast responsive waitress to refill our water, wine and take empty plates, Darling Harbour and Sydney Opera House dining view, easy reservation system, but I’m not sure will come back and pay regular price if there’s no improvement on their food in this case adding some varieties of food.

Petaling Street – Sydney

Last Friday I was strolling around Chinatown cause my spouse would fetched me in Central station after he finished his work for his birthday dinner in city. Cause too starving (skip my breakfast and lunch), so I managed to get some food to eat. Some said Petaling Street, which located in 760 George Street, Haymarket, Sydney is the best Malaysian-Chinese hawker food in Sydney. Oke lah we try!

They offer lots varities of Malaysian dish including nasi lemak. But because I would have dinner, so I’d prefer not-too heavy meal, dry egg noodles with sliced chicken ($12.90). They have free water so dont worry if you save budget. My dish tasted so-so, typical Chinese dry noodles. They using hainanese poached chooks as a side, and i didnt really enjoy the chooks cause its smells.

Anyway, I came there around 2.30pm which I didnt have idea if it nearly their closing time or not (cause in Zomato it stated their closing time is 11pm), but the waiters/waitresses seems rush up to done all the tables even we just had our last spoons without asking if we already finished or not. Even I could seen shocked face Indian guy in table next to me. I think it’s very rude. I wouldnt think come back. Ciao!

Food Depot – Sydney

When it comes to nasi padang (Padang style combination rice) I used to go to Pondok Buyung in Kingsford, so far the taste is most authentic than others (even the rumous has the chef not Indonesian but Malaysian but, who cares). So when I saw their ad in The Rock community (Indonesian lives in Sydney) facebook page that the famous Ibu Alya in Lakemba would join with Food Depot, which located in 532 Anzac Parade, Kingsford, Sydney (just few blocks away from Randwick Oriental Supermaket), I was beyond happy! Furthermore, they had promo during Easter weekend only $9 for set rice and $11 for regular price (after Easter) which is still cheap.

Aside hot bar (nasi padang), they offer other food like bakmi ayam, burger, salad and fried chicken. Ibu Alya ( i guess the lady with hijab was her), was very friendly. But seems like their order system still not settled yet and confusing some people. So we need to order and pay first, then si Ibu will give us a paper with queue number, then we present that paper to the waiter on hot bar. I was ordered nasi Padang set rice for $11 included rice, 1 veggies, 2 protein side dish. I tried sayur nangka (braised jackfruit in coconut milk curry) ~ tasted good, rendang (number 1 delicious food in the world CNN version ~ braised beef in coconut milk curry) ~ tasted good but I’d still prefer Pondok Buyung’s dried and black rendang, and balado ikan (fried fish coated with Indonesian chillies paste) ~ taste familiar and good even the sambal a bit salty for my liking. All in all, everything was good even the spicy was mild. Dont forget to ask them to pour some curry soup on your rice.

Tambo ciek!

Pinto – Sydney

Another Western with Japanese twist cafe to be tried. It’s located in 645/40 Campbell Street, Chinatown, Sydney. Just walking distance from Central station.

I knew this place from Zomato and from some reviews I read this cafe is well known with their cakes. Since when I came was brunch time which was too early to get my dessert yet my lunch meal, so I just ordered milk tea Thai crepes ($8.9) and butterfly pea latte ($5.5) for the drink. Ya i know, crepes also a dessert but it’s better than snacking a cake isnt it?

My milk tea Thai latte crepes came with same flavor thick sauce. Both were unsweetened, a bit bland I reckon. Far from my expectation. At least if the crepes not sweet, they can make the sauce sweeter. So it’s balanced each other.

My butterfly pea latte was JUST a milk in blue color. Thats it! Seems like this cafe only for instagram material, but the taste was so-so. Okay, it sounds unfair cause just judged based on two menu only. Yeah, maybe next time I’ll give them a try once more. Ciao!

Gibbons Street Cafe – Sydney

Another brunch spot to try, it’s located in Shop 1, 7-9 Gibbon Street, Redfern, Sydney. This place only walking distance from Redfern station, easily spotted on.

Actually I came here cause seen my favorite foodie’s instagram (@tomodachingoo) who was invited to try their Easter special menu. Unlucky me, those menu only available 4 days before and during Easter, so when I came the next day after, it gone already.

Cause wants to try some other eatery places, I just opt something light for my breakfast, which is Mango Bowl ($16) and chai latte ($3,8). My mango bowl basically was like smoothy bowl, but the mango itself more like mousse, it has silky texture and the sweet just okay. And i liked how they do the plating. My chai latte was good as well, it’s thick and had strong flavor like chai latte should be.

Anyway, they dont have toilet (just in case you feel want to), but they will take you to the next building with their access card. Ciao!

Beast & Bread – Wollongong

Spotting new breakfast place the last 2 weeks, it’s not a newly open btw, but we just found out. Located in small lane next to Humber Bar i already reviewed before, which is in 8 Crown Lane, Wollongong, this place a bit hidden.

I liked how they organized their dine in area, simple, neat and stylish. Not to mentioned their idea hanging forks and knives on magnetic board next our table. They also have open kitchen.

Their menu mostly healthy food, like their signature protein plate. When I arrived there around 11am, the waiter informed us that the salad hadnt been ready yet. But it’s okay, who the hell want to have salad for breakfast.

Me and my spouse opt to have same menu for breakie, it’s grilled cheese ($9,9), ciabatta with gruyere cheese and pickles, and served with bbq sauce. Simple dish actually but indeed really fulfilling.

For the drinks, my spouse ordered cappucino, while me chai latte. My chai latte not really good, too runny and milky. All costed us $27,80. Ciao!

Hangatnya Kuliner Rumah Jogja Yang Merakyat

Hanya berukuran lebar 2 METER saja. Biar kuperjelas kalau kamu takut gue salah ketik, 2 (DUA) METER SAJA.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Ruangan utamanya juga hanya muat sebarisan meja, which is quite unusual dibanding sama rumah makan lainnya yang biasa 2 barisan meja atau lebih. Despite the size, kami cukup nyaman melewatkan makan malam di sana.

Well, this is fully base on your own preference.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAGudeg Jogja Komplit (35rb)OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOpor ayam dan telur pindangOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAGudeg

Lalu disusul dengan menu Krecek. Jangan sebut “kecrek” ya! Jangan mengulangi kesalahan bodoh kami :D.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERATongseng Kambing

But, still. Everyone got their own taste preferences.
